Understanding Domain Renewal and Redemption Periods

What happens if you forget to renew your domain on time? At CoLi Link, we want to ensure your business stays online. Most domains follow a specific "lifecycle" once they expire. Understanding these stages will help you avoid high recovery fees or losing your domain to a competitor.

1. Active Status
Your domain is live and working. You can renew it at the standard price at any time. We recommend setting up Auto-Renewal in your dashboard to avoid any service gaps.
2. Grace Period (0–30 Days after Expiry)
If you miss your renewal date, your website and emails will stop working, but don't panic!
  • The Safety Window: For most domains (.com, .net, .org), there is a "Grace Period" where you can still renew at the standard price.
  • Regional Domains: For .gh, .ng, and .za, the grace period may vary. We recommend renewing within the first 5 days to ensure your local SEO isn't affected.
3. Redemption Period (30–70 Days after Expiry)
If the Grace Period passes, the domain enters the Redemption Phase.
  • The Penalty: The registry removes the domain from our control. To get it back, you must pay a Redemption Fee plus the renewal cost. This fee is set by the Registry (e.g., ICANN or GDNR) and can often be GHS500 to GHS1000 USD or more.
  • Manual Recovery: You cannot renew this through the dashboard; you must open a support ticket for our team to manually recover it for you.
4. Pending Delete (70+ Days after Expiry)
The domain is now being prepared for release back to the public.
  • No Recovery: At this stage, it is impossible to renew or recover the domain.
  • Public Auction: Once released, anyone in the world can buy it. Competitors often use "drop-catching" services to steal expired domains with high traffic.
How to Protect Your Domain
  1. Keep Your Email Updated: Ensure the email in your CoLi Link profile is one you check daily. We send alerts 30, 15, 7, and 1 day before expiry.
  2. Use Mobile Money (MoMo): You can renew your domain instantly using MTN MoMo or Telecel Cash—no credit card required.
  3. Renew for Multiple Years: You can renew your domain for up to 10 years in advance to "lock it in" and forget about it.
