How to Create and Manage FTP Accounts in CyberPanel

CyberPanel includes an embedded File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server that allows you to securely upload, download, and manage your website files. This guide will walk you through creating FTP accounts and connecting via external software like FileZilla or Cyberduck.

Step 1: Creating an FTP Account
  1. Log into your CyberPanel Dashboard.
  2. From the left sidebar, click on FTP > Create FTP Account.
  3. Select your website domain from the Select Website drop-down menu.
  4. Enter an FTP Username (e.g., developer or backup).
(Note: CyberPanel will automatically append your username to the site name, making it look like username_domain).

  5. Set a strong, unique Password.
  6. In the Path field, define the access level:
    • Leave it blank or use / to give access to the entire website root directory.
    • Specify a folder path (e.g., /public_html/assets) to restrict the user to that folder only.
  7. Click the Create FTP button.
Step 2: Connection Settings for External Clients (CoreFTP Recommended)
To connect to your server using a client like CoreFTP, FileZilla, Cyberduck, or WinSCP, use these credentials:
  • Host / Server: Your domain name (e.g., yourdomain.com) or your server's IP address.
  • Username: The full generated FTP username (e.g., developer_yourdomain).
  • Password: The password you set during creation.
  • Port:
    • 21 for standard FTP/Explicit TLS (Recommended).
    • 22 if you are using the main server root account via SFTP.
Step 3: Configuring Your FTP Client (Recommended Settings)
For security and stability, configure your FTP application with the following parameters:
  • Protocol: FTP - File Transfer Protocol.
  • Encryption: Use Require explicit FTP over TLS (if available) to encrypt your login details and data transfers.
  • Transfer Mode: Set to Passive. Active mode often gets blocked by local network firewalls.
Troubleshooting Common FTP Errors
  • Error: 530 Login Authentication Failed
    • Double-check your username. Make sure you are using the full suffix suffix created by CyberPanel (user_domain), not just the prefix.
    • Reset the password in CyberPanel under FTP > List FTP Accounts > Change Password.
  • Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing (Timeout)
    • This is usually caused by firewall restrictions. Ensure that Passive Mode ports (40000:50000) are open in your CyberPanel firewall rules under Security > Firewall.
  • Cannot connect via SFTP (Port 22)
    • Custom FTP accounts created in CyberPanel only support standard FTP/FTPS (Port 21). Only the master server root or admin users can connect via SFTP on Port 22.
